Body awareness

How can these patterns show up in your body and daily life?

A plain-language look at compensation patterns, stress, and the habits your body builds to keep you going.

Your body is constantly adjusting to what happens to you.

If you hurt your knee, you might start putting more weight on the other leg without realizing it. If you sit for hours every day, certain areas may become stiff while others work overtime. If you've been under a lot of stress, you might clench your jaw, hold your breath, tighten your shoulders, or have a hard time fully resting.

These changes are called compensation patterns. They are your body's way of helping you keep going. That can be useful at first, but when a pattern sticks around for too long, it may start creating pain, tension, fatigue, or limited movement somewhere else.

Patterns aren't only physical

  • Ignore your body until the discomfort becomes impossible to avoid
  • Feel guilty when you rest
  • Keep pushing even when you're exhausted
  • Have trouble knowing what your body needs
  • Repeat habits that no longer feel good
  • Feel disconnected, overwhelmed, or stuck

This doesn't mean every pain has an emotional cause, or that positive thinking can magically heal an injury. It means your physical health and your life affect each other. Looking at both can give us more useful information than focusing only on the place that hurts.
